Part of the novel project is the creation of a reflective journal with three entries and a cover. The cover should be creative and reflect some aspect of your novel. For example, a journal cover over the short story "To Build a Fire" might be a drawing which depicts a man sitting in the Arctic wilderness with a dog. Or, a journal cover for the short story "The Infamous Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" might depict a man with a frog, or a man feeding a frog lead pellets. If you are not artistically skilled or mindful, you may print images and create a collage to reflect some aspect of your novel. You could even consider generating a word collage online using words which describe some aspect of your text. There are numerous ways to get creative with your journal covers- if you have an idea that you're not sure of e-mailing me is the best way to get it looked at and approved quickly. The purpose of the journal entries is to both summarize important details from your novel to track your reading as well as to providing thoughtful reflection on those details. An important part of your reading will be looking at your text for theme. These journals, with the details you provide, should address possible themes in your novel and how you have developed those themes based on elements of fiction (plot, character, setting, conflict, and point of view) from the novel. Remember to look at the notes on theme from class on 2/27 when thinking about theme.
Due Dates: Journal 1- 3/10 Journal 2- 3/17 Journal 3- 3/25 Cover- Due no later than 3/25. As always, these dates are subject to change: we may find in class that students need more time to address another assignment, and so extensions may occur. However, until you are notified of these extensions both in-class and via e-mail, the dates above should be considered correct and impending.
